Security beefed up in Abia as INEC begins election

- Abia state Independent National Electoral Commission is conducting election in the seventeen local government areas of the state

- The Commissioner of Police in the state, Adeleye Oyebade, said that the command had mapped out its operational plans to secure the state during and after the election

The Commissioner of Police in Abia State, Adeleye Oyebade, has said the state police command would provide adequate security across the seventeen local government areas of the state to ensure a smooth conduct of the local government election today.

He stated that the Nigeria’s constitution guarantees that there must be adequate security during elections at the local councils because the people at the grassroots were involved.

Oyebade who spoke during a press conference with senior police officers in Umuahia, the state capital, pointed out that the command had mapped out its operational plans to secure the state during and after the election.

He explained that leaders of various political parties in the state have been briefed regarding the conduct of their candidates and the electorate on the election day.

He said, “Every credible election must be well planned, because proper planning prevents poor performance. So, those of us that are stakeholders in the state have a lot of roles to play to ensure that we have credible election today.

“We have received the guidelines that will regulate the conduct of everybody involved in the election. That is why we have been planning since the day that conduct of the election was announced. We have had series of meetings; and we have robust strategies that will work.

“We have mapped out areas that we must put security measures that will curtail the excesses of those people that will attempt to disrupt the smooth conduct of the election.

“The Police have resolved to provide a level playing ground to all those that will participate in the election, but our message is that they should play the game according to the rule".
